  • 1 cup peeled, crushed ripe tomatoes, preferably plum tomatoes, with their juices
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds romano beans (flat green beans), ends trimmed (or fresh cranberry beans in their shells).
